Plan to bring Rennie Mackintosh School back into public use

An art gallery and studio group is exploring taking on a famous Glasgow landmark and bringing it back to life.

The Scotland Street School Museum has been closed since 2020, denying local people and visitors the opportunity to step back in time and experience a Victorian school day.
Now, David Dale Gallery & Studios is exploring taking on a 25-year lease to bring the building back into meaningful public use.
The gallery is looking to take on the building through Glasgow City Council’s People Make Glasgow Communities programme, under which third parties take over the ownership and management of facilities that the council or Glasgow Life is unable or unwilling to keep open.
It is proposing to transform the building into a creative hub for Glasgow, bringing it back into full public use.
The ground floor would accommodate a café, contemporary art gallery, artist residency space and screening room, while the upper floors would provide artist studios and space for creative businesses.
The gallery said: “We will retain and enhance as much of the building’s original interior and character as possible, including dedicating space to telling the story of the school and Mackintosh’s architecture.
“Subject to the lease being agreed, we hope to begin works in 2027, with a view to opening the building to the public in 2028.”
A previous proposal had sought to use the building as an early-years education facility following the museum’s closure during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the plan was ultimately deemed not feasible.
Work is already progressing to refurbish the exterior of the building.
Scotland Street School is regarded as one of Glasgow’s most significant works by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The renowned architect, who collaborated with his wife Margaret on many of his projects, designed the school, which was built between 1903 and 1906.
David Dale Gallery & Studios is now asking the public to share their views on the future of the school. A survey on its website will be used to help inform its decisions and shape the proposals.
An information session will be held at Kinning Park Complex on the evening of 2 October, with a further local session to be confirmed, as well as another event at David Dale Gallery.

News Update Sep 2007 re Site Development: Tiger Developments purchased in mid-2007 the ten-acre Scotland Street School site which includes architect Charles Rennie Macintosh’s Scotland Street School. The site was subject of redevelopment proposals by Keppie Design in the late nineties. The planned M74 extension is due to include an exit near the site (Ed. this motorway extension has now been built and opened some years ago).
Cooper Cromar Architects appointed to produce a masterplan and density feasibility study for the site. An outline planning application is due to be submitted before the end of 2007. £100m Proposal by Tiger Developments incl. 358,000sqft office space; 130-bed hotel; retail units.

Scotland Street School to be retained
Designed by Mackintosh for the School Board of Glasgow, this interesting stone building features symmetrical glazed stair towers, similar to the Modernist Werkbund & Fagus Shoe Factory by Gropius in Germany but with typical Mackintosh close-centred grids of black leaded glass.
The School closed in 1979 due to insufficient pupil numbers but was refurbished when Glasgow became European capital of Culture in 1990. Since then it has become the Glasgow Museum of Education, featuring an audio visual theatre, period classrooms and exhibition space.
